Essential Oils for Camping

Our family was out camping at Malaekahana on the North Shore of O’ahu this last weekend which, I'm coming to realize, gets to be more fun the older the kids get. We're getting closer to Spring and as you’re ready to pack up your gear and head to the great outdoors, don’t forget to pack your essential oils! There are some fantastic essential oils for camping that come in handy and can make for a much more enjoyable experience. Today I’m going to give you a list of 4 essential oils you should bring along on your next camping adventure.

Terrashield - We use and love Terrashield when we're camping. It's a blend of 15 different essential oils that, as well as being completely natural, is an effective way of keeping biting insects at bay. You can apply it directly to the skin or use it in a spray bottle, and is great for evenings around the campfire. You can even spray it around the entrance to your tent to deter the mosquitos from camping out with you!

Lavender - Lavender essential oil is one of the most versatile essential oils at our disposal and there are many practical ways lavender comes in handy while camping. If the bities do get past your Terrashield, apply some lavender oil to any mosquito bites and it helps relieve redness and itchiness! If you forget your sunscreen (or forget to reapply it), lavender is very soothing to sunburned skin!

Peppermint - Ants, flies, spiders and other creepy-crawlies are an inherent neighbor during camping trips. While they are very partial to joining you for meals as uninvited guests, they hate peppermint oil. Put a few drops of peppermint oil around where you are eating, or where you see a colony of ants, and they will steer clear. Peppermint also has fantastic cooling properties so, like Lavender oil, is fantastic on the skin after a long day in the sun. If you're planning any hiking as a part of your trip, keep the peppermint oil handy! Rub peppermint oil on any sore muscles and feet for fast and soothing relief.

Correct-X - This is a really great ointment to keep on hand at all times, but especially with kids at the playground, on hikes and camping. When you or the kids get a cut or scrape, this should be a part of the treatment. Correct-X helps soothe the skin while hydrating it and keeping it clean while it heals.

You can enjoy the outdoors with family and mitigate some of the common irritations. Enjoy Presidents Day, and let us know if your family has other things that get packed first when you're preparing for a camping trip!
