Infant Sleep Resources

Today I want to share some of my favorite infant sleep books and resources. You know how important baby and momma sleep is for health, wellbeing, and SANITY.

Eight years ago, we were expecting our first baby girl. ​Most of the pregnancy books focus on everything up to and including the birth…​We wanted to know what to do with our newborn AFTER the birth.

We read infant sleep books, watched newborn care DVDs, perused parenting magazines, signed up for parenting classes.

By the time our daughter arrived, we had a plan in place to get her sleeping through the night. ​Just six weeks and five days later, she slept 8 hours straight.

I felt like a million bucks!

A couple years later, daughter number two arrived and she slept through by 7 weeks, 6 days.

To this day, both our girls typically sleep 11-12 hours every night. They are 5 and 7.

Brad and I loved our transition to parenthood and it came with ease (thanks to all the reading and learning we did). We would have been zombies if those girls didn't sleep.

What we learned is that sleep is a natural process, but there are lots of things that can mess it up! Over the years, friends and clients have asked me how we learned to get the girls to sleep. Honestly, it's from consuming lots of info. And we also had a goal - we wanted our daughters to get the sleep they needed (and the sleep WE needed).

Here are some of the books I recommend:

  • On Becoming Babywise: Giving Your Infant the Gift of Nighttime Sleep by Dr. Robert Bucknam and Gary Ezzo. I loved this book. My Momma sent it to me when I was pregnant with our first daughter. Gary Ezzo is the guy that crafted the eat - play - sleep cycle routine. While this book does not offer much on settling techniques, you will learn how to structure baby's day.

  • The Happiest Baby on the Block by Dr. Harvey Karp. While I don't agree with everything in this book, it does provide a great overview of popular settling strategies (in this case, the 5 S's - swaddling, side or stomach position, shushing, swinging, and sucking).

  • Baby Whispering by Sharlene Poole. I learned so much from this woman when I was pregnant the first time around. She offers practical tips on how to prepare for a newborn.

I hope you find those books helpful. Of course, this is only the tip of the iceberg. I've read countless articles, studies, more books, and taken classes. You're not going to learn it all overnight. But this is a great start.
