What Are Essential Oils

Essential oils are the defense system of plants. Their role in nature is to protect plants from bacteria, fungus, and other harmful processes. Essential oils are extracted from seeds, bark, stems, roots, flowers, and other parts of the plant. Growers and distillers have partnered together to bottle the power of plant medicine for our use. Essential oils are a gift from God. It’s about time we get back to the basics and adopt the use of plant-based therapies.

How To Use Essential Oils

There are three ways to use essential oils for personal health and wellbeing:

Aromatically

This is when you smell the essential oils straight from the bottle, cupped in your hand like an inhaler, or via a diffuser.  There is a scientific link between aroma and a physiological response in our bodies.  Using essential oils aromatically is ideal for mood management, emotional wellbeing, and respiratory issues.

Topically

This is when you apply the essential oils directly onto your body.  You can apply oils to skin, hair, teeth, nails, mouth, and also use in the bath with Epsom salt.  Applying oils directly to the body without diluting with a carrier oil (e.g. coconut oil, sweet almond oil, jojoba) is often referred to as “neat”.  Using essential oils topically is ideal for addressing localized pain, boosting immune system, and skin issues.  *Tip: apply oils to the bottoms of your feet because the largest pores in our body are located there, so you will get fast absorption.

Internally

This is when you take essential oils in your water, under your tongue, in aveggie capsule, or in your favorite cooking recipes.  You can only take therapeutic grade essential oils internally.  Most essential oils off the shelf at your local health food store are NOT safe for internal consumption, as is indicated on the bottle.  Many essential oils are categorized by the FDA as safe for human consumption. Using essential oils internally is ideal for digestive issues, infectious or degenerative illnesses, and internal cleansing.

Quality Matters

Not all essential oils are created equal.  When you use  industry leading essential oils, you know you are getting oils that are free of fillers, artificial ingredients, pesticides, toxins, and other contaminants. Some oils go through rigorous, independent third-party testing to ensure we have therapeutic grade oils.  The testing also ensures that each oil has the right active compounds for safe use and effectiveness.

Sourcing plants for essential oils is very important.  Some oil companies works with a global network of growers, distillers, and essential oil chemists to find the safest and most beneficial oils for our use.  When plants grow in their indigenous habitat, the quality is superior.  For example, pineapples in Hawai’i are DELICIOUS.  The fragrance, the juiciness, the taste is pleasing.  In New Zealand, pineapples are not delicious.  Sourcing the very best version of plants is so importantso we get the very best version of healing oils.

I purchase oils from a company that works directly with farmers to provide a fair trade, sustainable industry in communities.
